Jom EAT! Gia Xiang Steamboat Restaurant

Over the past weekend, we had really awesome time bonding with our family members in Georgetown, Penang. This is our favourite city in Malaysia, thanks to its vibrance and cultural setting. Of course, no trip would be complete without a quality-assured feast in this foodie paradise of Malaysia.

On Saturday evening, we found ourselves patronising Gia Xiang Steamboat Restaurant at Jalan Krian again. Yes, again. We have to admit that it’s not our first visit, as we have been to this restaurant a few times. There are a few Gia Xiang outlets in Penang, but we always go to the Jalan Krian branch (mainly because we are loyal, teehee!). The indoor dining area is air-conditioned and able to accommodate approximately 40-50 diners (under normal circumstance). At the side of the dining hall, a staircase leads to the upper floor, where there are three VIP rooms for those coming in larger group. On days when the evening is cooling, we rather enjoy dining al-fresco. Maybe it’s just a my-thing, steamboat always tastes better outdoors!

Since we always travel with baby Zyan these days, the friendly staff will always approach us to offer service and suggestions so Zyan will feel comfortable when his parents are enjoying dinner. Their menu is rather on the extensive side, but reasonably priced. We always order their specialty pot – Fish Head with Yam(魚頭芋頭鍋). The pot itself comes with a generous variety of ingredients, such as fried fish head pieces, yam, meat balls, Chinese cabbage, mushrooms, beancurd skin, cold tofu etc. Some people will have it as it, or order a bowl of rice to go with the pot. We often order a few side dishes to go with the pot. This is our top recommendation, despite other pots we tried like Pickle with Fish(酸菜魚)is good too.

It’s completely addictive.

The milky broth is rich and flavourful. I am totally envious of Penangites. The deep-fried grouper fish pieces are fresh and despite being deep-fried beforehand, it still remains juicy. It’s a gem for seafood lovers like me. The pot itself makes a wholesome meal.

All additional dishes come in reasonable portion, making them easily shareable, even when there aren’t many of us around the dining table. That simply means we can order a variety! Don’t worry, the dishes are reasonably priced 🙂
Our recent visit with family members were made more exciting as we managed to try another pot – Pickle with Fish(酸菜魚)! We aren’t typical pickle person, but the flavour of the pot was well-balanced with the right amount of sourness and spiciness. It made the pot very appetising. For this pot, the chef used red snapper slices. The smooth texture of the fish when cooked just right was outstanding.

If you’re in Georgetown and not in the mood for street food, this could be a good option!
