Jom EAT! // Kampung Contemporary Dining @ Seksyen 17 PJ

Malaysians generally have a soft spot for “kampung”, which translates ‘village’. This is where people return for basic yet comforting food, because that’s how home-cooked food should be like.

One day as we were wandering around Seksyen 17 area, we came across a relatively quiet street where a few eateries and independent cafés instantly caught our attention. There was a banana leaf rice restaurant, some dessert shops and right at the corner, there was also a Thai restaurant. Our bad, we didn’t notice this area sooner.

As we drove past the street, I was attracted to a minimalist façade, and that’s where Kampung Contemporary Dining is. The exterior is entirely white, with just a simple signage – a traditional Chinese word for Kampung, 鄉. The lush green plants at the shop front make the whole mood even more of a delight to the eyes.

As soon as we entered the shop, we were surprised by the bright and airy interior. Despite being simple and basic, we like it for being tidy and clean, with plenty of space to accommodate dine-in customers. The space stretched far back, we could imagine the place serving a full house yet not overly-crowded. However, it could be due to CMCO (because we heard this place can get very busy during lunch hours), there weren’t many dine-in customers on the day we were there.

On the left of the shop, there was a bar with a display shelf of nyonya kuih (a variety of nyonya sweet or savoury treats), where it linked to an enclosed kitchen.

The restaurant serves quite an extensive range of nyonya dishes. It became popular among food lovers as the chef does not use any MSG in any of the dishes, so we can safely conclude this is a healthier version of nyonya dishes to-go place. Strict to the policy, the restaurant only uses fresh ingredients in food preparation, even sauces are made from scratch with the finest ingredients which they sourced from local suppliers.

We were there in an ordinary afternoon and didn’t want to fill ourselves up too much so we didn’t order from their dishes menu. Instead, we ordered two serving of nasi lemak with different dishes – Siu Yuk Pork Lard Nasi Lemak and Chicken Rendang Pork Lard Nasi Lemak. Oh yes, it’s non-halal. We were truly excited by nasi lemak with pork lard, after all, we haven’t come across any other restaurant serving this.

Siu Yuk Pork Lard Nasi Lemak (RM25)

Priced slightly steeper than usual nasi lemak, it was still a good value, I’d say. The huge portion of nasi lemak was made of basmati rice cooked in coconut milk (so fragrant!), topped with crunchy pork lard, with sides of cucumber slices, kampung egg, roasted peanut and mega-sized ikan bilis (look how huge they are!). Ops, not to forget, their in-house roasted pork belly (siu yuk)! The long grain rice was definitely an outstanding star on the plate – it’s fluffy and fragrant (and maybe healthier?). When it’s topped with pork lard, the crunchiness gave the mouthful of rice a more sophisticated flavour profile. The sambal was slightly tangy but not too spicy. We also loved the generous amount of siu yuk a.k.a roasted pork on the plate. It’s a good side dish, when paired with the nasi lemak, but not extraordinarily outstanding if you’re to have the siu yuk as an individual dish. The lean part was slightly dry (slightly, slightly) and the crispy skin wasn’t crispy enough (okay, pardon my description).

Chicken Rendang Pork Lard Nasi Lemak (RM22)

This is another version of Pork Lard Nasi Lemak, but instead of Siu Yuk, it came with chicken rendang. I like chicken rendang. I’ve always hoped that my Malay neighbours would give me a pot of rendang on any of the festivals (of course, it hasn’t happened yet so it remains my secret wish 🤣). Personally, I prefer chichen rendang to siu yuk. Its rich coconut, creamy flavour, well-balanced by a medley of spices, a true delight. The chicken was tender and juicy. MA-MA-MIA! If you like chicken rendang and pork lard, this is your dream comes true.

What we think about Kampung Contemporary Dining?

If you like nyonya cuisine, this is a good place to go. The dining space is spacious and comfortable, the food is tasty and heartily prepared using quality ingredient, there is every reason to give this restaurant a try.
